Wake and switch off PCs

1 min read · Applies to RG-DesktopLink 0.9.4 on Windows 10 and 11

Start the office in the morning and switch it off in the evening from one chair: from the main PC's desk, or from the phone.

Lock, sleep, restart, shut down

On the office desk, right-click a screen → Power:

ChoiceWhat happens on that PC
LockThe lock screen, as with Win+L.
SleepIt goes to sleep.
RestartWith 15 seconds of notice; a program with unsaved work can still stop it.
Shut downWith 15 seconds of notice, as above.

Wake a PC that is off

A PC that is off stays on the desk, grey. Right-click it → Wake it up. A moment later it starts; if it does not start within the time it gets, the main PC (and the phone) says so, and what it needs.

Make waking work (once per PC)

Waking uses Wake on LAN: a special packet on the network that the network card listens for while the PC is off. It needs, once per PC:

  1. In the BIOS (the setup screen at start, often F2 or Del): Wake on LAN on. On a Dell, also Deep Sleep Control off.
  2. In Windows, Device Manager → the network card → Power Management: tick "Allow this device to wake the computer" and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer".
  3. Windows Fast Startup off (Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do).
  4. A network cable: most PCs do not wake over Wi-Fi.
Tip

From Sleep a PC usually wakes without any of this. From a full shut down it needs all four.

From the phone

The Android app shows every PC with its state: Wake it up and Power… work there too.
